The Formulations

Sixteen preparations, each held as a written formula and mixed to order. Every one carries a Latin name and a single state of intention. Our four most popular are shown here. Every formulation is made by request.

By alignment, we mean the way ingredients are brought together within our family formulation tradition around a shared character and intention—not a claim that the product changes the body or treats a condition.

Ancient Wisdom. Modern Wellness. Universal Consciousness.

An old apothecary greenhouse in a misty forest, its shelves lined with amber bottles and drying herbs

A modern botanical house with an old lineage.

Illumeflora keeps, interprets and prepares botanical formulas that were written down long before it existed. Each one is mixed by hand, in quantities small enough to finish in an afternoon, for the ordinary rituals of a contemporary day.

The Formula

Recipes worth preserving.

The formulas were not invented here. They were written out, corrected in the margins, and passed forward in one family until they reached this bench.

Nothing has been reformulated to be made cheaper. What has changed is the standard: whole distillates, weighed rather than guessed, bottled in amber glass and dated on the base.

Hands, scale, mortar and pestle, amber glass
The Making

Blended by hand. Made slowly.

Every batch is a few dozen bottles. The heavy oils are laid down first and left to marry for days before the citrus goes in, because a formula mixed in one sitting reads thin.

Botanicals are bought whole and unrectified, from the same few distillers each season. Each bottle is filled, capped and dated by hand.

Botanical Composition

A formula is a composition, not a single oil.

An oil on its own is one note held indefinitely. A formulation is built the way a scent is built: something bright that arrives and leaves, something floral or herbal underneath it, and something heavy at the bottom that keeps the whole thing in the room.

That is why the botanicals are named inside each formulation rather than on the shelf. The list matters less than the proportion, and the proportion stays on the card.

The vibration of each ingredient

Every molecule in a plant oil vibrates. Its bonds stretch and bend at fixed rates, and each kind of bond absorbs infrared light at its own position. Chemists record these positions in wavenumbers (cm⁻¹, the number of light waves per centimeter) to identify an oil and check that it is pure. The numbers below come from peer-reviewed infrared studies unless a note says they are a textbook range. Some bands were measured in another oil that contains the same molecule. We do not use the "megahertz frequency" figures found online. We found no peer-reviewed research behind them.

How the vibrations are calibrated

An infrared instrument is checked against a thin polystyrene film certified by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (Standard Reference Material 1921b). Polystyrene absorbs at fixed, certified positions, including 3060.14, 1601.38, 1028.42 and 906.82 cm⁻¹. The instrument measures the film at least six times, at 23 °C, and its scale is corrected until its readings match the certified values within their stated uncertainty.

The idea

Why nothing in a formula stands alone

A note on proportion, and on why the same botanical reads differently in two preparations.

The deeper idea

Universal Consciousness

U.C.

The U.C. within Illumeflora begins with a simple idea: nothing exists alone.

A plant is shaped by soil, season, water and light. A fragrance changes when it touches skin. A ritual changes according to the person who enters it.

Ancient traditions understood the world through these relationships long before modern language divided body, nature and consciousness into separate things.

Illumeflora returns to that older idea. We call it Universal Consciousness — the recognition that life participates in something larger than its individual parts, and that the rituals we repeat can become moments of attention within that whole.

Our botanical formulations are not offered as shortcuts to transformation. They are invitations to ritual: to notice scent, touch, breath, season and the living materials from which each preparation was made.

Ancient Wisdom. Modern Wellness. Universal Consciousness.

The bench

Eleven days of marrying

Once a formulation is mixed, we do not rush it into a bottle. It rests on the bench for eleven days while the individual components settle into one another and the blend becomes more coherent as a whole.

During that time, sharper notes can soften, heavier materials can integrate, and the character of the preparation can shift subtly from what it was on the first day. We observe that evolution before deciding it is ready.

In our family practice, this period has always been called marrying: giving the ingredients time to become a formulation rather than simply a collection of materials.

The eleven days are not a marketing flourish. They are part of the process.

How It Works

Every formulation is made by request and mixed by hand after your request is confirmed. Choose one, or answer twelve short questions and we will suggest one by scent, by time of day and by how you like to use it.

Choose the preparation that draws you, tell us about the ritual you are creating, and we will confirm when it can be prepared.

About

Illumeflora is one bench. The preparations kept here are mixed by hand from whole distillates and bottled in amber glass, a few dozen at a time.

Everything is sold direct. There is no wholesale, no third party, and no reformulation to reach a lower price.

Ancient wisdom

Long before anyone wrote the word chemistry, people kept plants in oil, in wax and in smoke. Egyptian perfumers, Greek and Roman writers on plants, and the herbalists of medieval Europe wrote down what they made and how they made it. Illumeflora belongs to that habit of keeping. What we value is the record itself: which plants were used, in what proportion, and by whose hands.

Traditional use

Many of the botanicals in these formulas have long histories in personal care, perfumery, bathing, ritual, grooming, and household care. We share those histories because they are part of each plant’s story and part of the traditions that informed our family formulations.

Tradition is history, not proof. We do not claim that any Illumeflora formulation will produce a particular health outcome simply because a plant was used that way in the past.

Universal Consciousness

Universal Consciousness is our name for an old idea: nothing exists alone. A plant is shaped by its soil, its season and its light. A scent changes on each person's skin. A ritual changes with the person who keeps it. Each formulation carries one word, such as Quiet, Winter or Comfort, to name the moment it was made for, not a result it promises.

Energetic alignment

Many traditions describe ritual as a way of bringing breath, attention and body into one rhythm. We use the word alignment in that sense: the feeling of a deliberate pause, a familiar scent and a few minutes kept for yourself. It describes how a ritual can feel. It is not a measurable effect on the body, and we do not present it as one.

Plant intelligence

Plants sense light, water, gravity and the plants around them, and they respond. Botanists study this as plant signaling and behavior. The aromatic molecules in an essential oil are part of how a plant meets its world: some draw pollinators, and some warn away the animals that would eat it. When we speak of the intelligence of a plant, we mean that each drop is the record of a living thing answering its place.

Vibration and frequency

Everything in nature is in motion. Plants, water, minerals, stone, wood, and the human body all contain matter whose molecules move and vibrate in measurable ways.

You will find many claims that individual essential oils possess specific “healing frequencies” measured in megahertz. We looked for published, peer-reviewed research supporting those exact numbers and did not find it, so we do not repeat them.

What science can measure is molecular vibration. Chemists use techniques such as infrared spectroscopy to observe characteristic molecular vibrations, helping identify botanical compounds and assess the composition and purity of essential oils.

Vibration also has another meaning within Illumeflora.

Our formulas come from a family tradition that considers the character of each material and how it meets the others. Plants, water, minerals, resins, woods, and stones each bring their own physical qualities, aroma, texture, history, and presence. We refer to the relationship among those qualities as alignment.

When we formulate, we consider not simply which ingredients belong in a blend, but how their individual qualities meet and influence one another. Some carry a grounding quality, some are more activating, some steady, some expansive, some protective. In our family tradition, formulation is the work of bringing those different qualities into alignment so the finished blend holds a coherent intention. That alignment is part of the formula itself.

We use the language of vibration and alignment to describe this formulation philosophy, not to claim that an Illumeflora product emits a medically proven frequency or treats a health condition.

Our Field Notes make that distinction clear: what science can measure, what botanical traditions have taught across generations, and what belongs to the Illumeflora family philosophy of formulation.

Healing

The oldest meaning of the word heal is to make whole. We use it only in that sense: the wholeness of a quiet ritual, of a scent that belongs to one time of day, of a thing made slowly by hand. Illumeflora products are cosmetics. They are not medicines, and they are not a substitute for care from a doctor.

Questions

Plain answers about safety and use.

Are Illumeflora products safe to use?

They are cosmetics made from plant oils, butters and essential oils. Essential oils are concentrated plant materials, and any of them can irritate skin or cause an allergic reaction in some people. Read the warnings on each product page and on each label, test on a small patch of skin first, and stop using a product if your skin reacts.

Can I use them while pregnant or nursing?

Ask your doctor or midwife before you use any essential oil product while pregnant or nursing. We do not recommend any formulation for use during pregnancy.

Can I use them on children?

Our formulations are made for adults. Keep every bottle out of reach of children. Do not use them on babies or young children. Several formulations contain peppermint, eucalyptus, camphor or wintergreen, which should never be used on or near a young child's face.

Are they safe around pets?

Many essential oils can harm animals, and cats are especially sensitive. Do not apply any formulation to a pet. Keep bottles closed and out of reach, and let the oil soak into your skin before you handle a pet. Ask your veterinarian if you are unsure.

I take medication. Can I use them?

Ask your doctor or pharmacist first. Some essential oils, such as wintergreen, are not suitable for people who take certain medicines or who are allergic to aspirin.

I have allergies or sensitive skin.

Every ingredient is listed in full on each product page and on each label. Read the list before you order. If you know you react to an ingredient, choose another formulation. If your skin is sensitive, test on a small patch of skin on the inner arm and wait 24 hours before using a product more widely.

How do I use them on my skin?

Apply a small amount to clean, unbroken skin, following the directions on the label. Keep the oils away from your eyes, the inside of your nose and ears, and any broken or irritated skin. Wash your hands after use. Formulations that contain citrus oils can make skin sensitive to sunlight, so keep that skin out of strong sun and tanning beds for 12 hours.

Can I swallow them or add them to food or drinks?

No. Every Illumeflora product is for external use only. Never swallow a formulation or add it to food or drink. If a product is swallowed, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or seek medical help right away.

Are the oils diluted?

Yes. Every formulation is blended into a carrier oil, butter or wax before it is bottled. Never apply an undiluted essential oil to your skin, and do not add more essential oil to a bottle.

What will I notice when I use one?

You will notice its scent, and the feel of the oil or balm on your skin. Carrier oils and butters soften and condition skin. That is what our products are made to do. We make no promise of any effect on your body, your health or your mood.

How quickly does a formulation work?

There is nothing to wait for. The scent opens on your skin within a few minutes and softens over the next hour or two as the lighter notes fade and the heavier ones remain. If you are looking for relief from a symptom, please speak with a doctor. Our products are not made for that.

Do you make bespoke formulations?

Yes. A bespoke formulation is blended to the scent family, strength, texture and season you choose. Request one with the form under How It Works. We make bespoke formulations for scent and skin feel only. We do not make them for any health, physical or emotional concern.

How do I order?

Every formulation is made by request. Use the request form under How It Works. Choose the formulation or a bespoke formulation, tell us about the ritual you want, and we will write back with its price and when it can be made. Please do not include medical information. We cannot choose a formulation for any health condition.

Do you offer subscriptions?

No. There are no subscriptions and no automatic reorders. You are charged only for the order you place.
